ACHS prepares for new schedule

The ACHS SBDM council is putting the finishing touches on the new trimester schedule before school starts on Aug. 5.

The council discussed the schedule at its regular meeting on Tuesday.

The working trimester schedule is the first trimester, Aug. 5 through Nov. 5, second trimester, Nov. 8 through Feb. 11, and third trimester Feb. 14 through May 18.

ACHS principal Troy Young said a bell will not ring to announce class changes until a month after school starts. Young wants to make sure the schedule works before the bell schedule is put into place.

Two new AP courses, English and computer science, were added to the schedule, along with a credit change.

AP courses will now be worth one and a half credits causing the council to question its weighted course policy.

At this point the weighted course policy has seven credits per semester. The council discussed increasing the number because of the credit change.

“It isn’t enough,” said Ann Young, ACHS counselor. “You’re going to have to adjust the numbers.”

The council will continue to look into the issue and do more research before the decision is made.

“We need to Look at the seniors now and see what they are taking,” Troy Young said.

CELL PHONE POLICY

The council also looked at changing the cell phone policy.

Troy Young suggested to the council that students be allowed to use their cell phones during non-instructional time, such as before and after school and during lunch in the cafeteria.

Young said the purpose was to cut down on hall traffic and get the students back into the cafeteria.

“If it works for 20 students, that’s 20 students we don’t have running around the building,”  Young said.

Other schools such as Bardstown have implemented the clause in the policy and have seen success.

“At the high school level, it’s worked very well,” Young said.

“I think it will work,” he added. “If we try it and it doesn’t work, we can switch back.”

The council will consider the issue at the next meeting.

The SBDM council had two members leave, parent member George Payne and teacher member John Peck.  Teacher member Kevin Robertson and parent member Sandy Pyles took their place on the council. Other members include Lillie Franklin, parent member; and Michael Godsey and Keri Willis, teacher members.

The SBDM council meetings are held the third Monday in each month at 3:15 p.m. at the conferences room at the high school.
