Cell phone pegged as factor in multi-car collision

Rachel Johnson, of Science hill, was extricated from her 2006 Nissan Altima after she pulled into the path of Elizabeth Miller, of Campbellsville, while trying to make a left turn

Cell phone usage was pegged as a factor in a multicar collision on Monday that sent several to the hospital.

Rachel Johnson, of Science Hill, was on the phone with her boyfriend at the time of the collision.

Johnson, who was operating a 2006 Nisan Altima, pulled into the path of a 2007 GMC Arcadia going northbound on the Hwy. 55 bypass driven by Elizabeth Miller, 39, of Campbellsville, while she was attempting to make a left turn onto Hwy. 55.

Curtis Morris, of Russell Springs, and Martha Matney, of Greensburg witnessed Miller hit Johnson’s car on the left side.

Johnson had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to Westlake Regional Hospital by Adair EMS and then airlifted to University of Louisville.

City police officer Brad Scholl answered a cell phone belonging to Johnson while at the scene. Misty Henderson, an employee of Johnson at Cash Advance in Somerset, stated that Johnson’s boyfriend, Dusty, had been talking with Rachel on her cell phone during the accident.

Dusty told Henderson that he heard her scream and lost contact with her.

Passengers in the Miller vehicle were Kurt Miller, 42, Kody Miller, 12, Konnor Miller, 12, and Hunter Miller, 7, all of Campbellsville.  Passengers were treated at Westlake Regional Hospital and later released.

The collision was investigated by Officer Brad Scholl, assisted by Chief Mark Harris, Officer Tracy McCarol, and Code Enforcement Officer Bill Bailey.

Adair County EMS, Adair County Fire Department and Adair County Search and Rescue also responded to the scene.
