Schools opens August 5

Summer vacation is coming to an end and it’s time again for Adair County students to set their alarm clocks because school begins next Thursday.

The first day of school for Adair County students in grades K-12 will be Thursday, Aug. 5.

Superintendent Darrell Treece said he is looking forward to school starting back.

“We’re about kids,” Treece said. “I always look forward to the kids and getting them back started.”

RIDING THE BUS

David Jones, transportation director, is encouraging all returning students to ride the bus the first day of school in order to eliminate possible traffic backlogs near the schools.

Parents who bring their child/children on the first day are asked not to block bus lanes in either the morning or afternoon and to use correct entrances and exits to all the schools.

Parents are also asked to please allow extra time during the first few weeks of school, as there is always more traffic congestion for the first few weeks.

ENROLLMENT

Students who have not been enrolled in an Adair County school prior to this year or new preschool or kindergarten students who did not pre-enroll during the early registration process should fill out enrollment papers at the Adair County Board of Education located at 1204 Greensburg St.

Do not go directly to the schools to enroll students who will be attending preschool through grade five if they are a new student.

New sixth grade students can still be enrolled at Adair County Elementary School, seventh and eighth students at ACMS and 9-12 students at ACHS.

All three elementary schools have class rosters posted at the school and class supply lists are available at the schools and Columbia Wal-Mart. Class schedules for the middle and high school will be provided at their respective open houses. Open house dates can be found on page 5.

Preschool registration has already been held at all schools and parents will be notified of their child’s eligibility before the official start of that program. All returning preschool students will report Aug. 23, the same day as new students. Three-year-olds will be contacted by teachers as to when the child is eligible to begin classes.

Children who are in the primary program (kindergarten/entry level) for the first time must be five years old by Oct. 1.

Children enrolling in the preschool program must be four years old by Oct. 1 or age three with a disability. Preschool students must qualify by one or both criteria for enrollment (free lunch and/or some type of disability).

Any child entering these programs must have a birth certificate, immunization certificate, medical examination, eye examination and Social Security card.

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

At the beginning of school, each student will be issued a copy of the student handbook and code of pupil conduct that includes rules and regulations. Parents or guardians must sign and return the forms included to verify that they have been given a copy of these documents.

Each child will also have lunch applications as much of the district’s funding is based on lunch counts. If circumstances change during the year (i.e. loss of job, additional children in family, etc.) a new application will need to be submitted in order to determine eligibility for free/reduced meals.

CALENDAR

Doors to all schools will open to receive students each day at 7 a.m.

School will not be in session for students or staff on Monday, Sept. 6 for Labor Day.

Parent-teacher conference days are included in this year’s calendar on Sept. 24 and March 9.

All schools will hold conferences from noon-6 p.m. on those two days in an attempt to make it easier for parents to schedule a time to attend. Students will not attend school those two days.

A complete school calendar is included in the manuals students will be bringing home and is posted on the district website. School information is updated frequently on the district website at www.adair.k12.ky.us. A copy of the 2010-2011 school calendar can be found on page 9. PARENT PORTFOLIO AND SCHOOL MESSENGER SYSTEM

Parents are reminded that they may sign up for free access to the parent portal of Infinite Campus, the district’s student information system. This grants parents access to student attendance records, grades, missing assignments, and discipline incidents and the portal can be accessed 24 hours a day from any computer with Internet access. If parents signed up last school year, they do not need to sign up again this year.

School Messenger, the automated calling system implemented last year, will again be used as another way to keep parents informed of things such as school closings due to inclement weather, events taking place in schools and alerts as to when report cards are coming home.

EMPLOYEES

All certified employees of the Adair County school system are to report to Cranmer Dining Center on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College Wednesday morning, Aug. 4 for opening day activities.

Registration and breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the dining center. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. in the same location.

The keynote will be delivered by nationally recognized humorist and motivational speaker Judge Ray Corns.  Judge Corns is best known for his role in the 1990 landmark Kentucky Educational Reform Act that became known as KERA.

Following the morning program, employees will report to their respective schools for the remainder of the day or follow instructions given to them by their school principals. This is a regular work day in the school calendar and does not count as professional development.

All classified employees (bus drivers, custodians, instructional assistants, central office staff, food service employees, maintenance employees, etc.) are invited to breakfast at Adair County Elementary School, beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The breakfast for classified employees is being funded through a Kentucky Education Association Membership Drive Grant written by Camp Casey Director Dana Harmon.

Classified employees are to receive instructions from their immediate supervisor as to what duties to perform the remainder of Opening Day.
