Boy’s foot severed during wreck


Four people who were in the Chevy Malibu (above) during Saturday’s wreck were hospitalized.

An 8-year-old boy’s foot was severed and his mother was seriously injured in an accident Saturday on Hwy. 55 north in the city limits of Columbia.

Matthew Derry, 34, was driving north in a 2004 Malibu and attempted to make a left turn into Certa Care when he apparently turned into the path of a 2007 Ford pickup driven by Lindsey Cundiff, 22, of Columbia. Cundiff was traveling south when the accident occurred around 11:07 a.m.

Derry and his three passengers, Corliss Bradberry, 47, Dylan Ferguson, 8 and Lex Ferguson, 7, all of Columbia, were transported to Westlake Regional Hospital by Adair County EMS.

Dylan Ferguson’s foot was apparently severed in the accident and the 8-year-old was flown to Kosair Children’s Hospital. Derry and Bradberry, who suffered head wounds, were flown to University of Kentucky Hospital. Lex Ferguson was treated at Westlake Regional Hospital and later transferred to Louisville by Adair EMS.
Lindsey Cundiff was taken by private auto to Taylor County Regional Hospital.

Derry is expected to be charged with driving on a suspended license.

Columbia City Police Officer Gary Roy investigated the accident, with assistance from Adair County Deputy Sheriff Aaron Rainwater and Kentucky State Police Sgts. Jamie Heller and Trooper Andy Olson.

The Columbia Fire Department and Adair County Search and Rescue also assisted on the scene.

HORSE, BUGGY INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT

A Columbia man was hospitalized after his horse-drawn vehicle was involved in an accident.

Willie Miller was injured when his horse drawn buggy was hit by a truck.

Willie Miller, 46, of Columbia, was traveling westbound on Pellyton East Road in a horse-drawn buggy and Christopher Patton, 35, of Columbia, was traveling eastbound when they met on the one-lane road. Patton’s 1997 Ford Ranger struck the horse in the rear left leg and then hit the buggy.

Miller was transported to Taylor County Hospital.

The horse had to be destroyed on the scene.

Adair County Deputy Sheriff Aaron Rainwater investigated.
